Richard “Dick” Carl Kraft

Richard “Dick” Carl Kraft, 73, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 20, 2018. He passed away peacefully at St. Vincent’s Hospital surrounded by his family and special friend Pastor Gary Bobo. Richard was born in Billings, Montana, on July 8, 1944, to Ed Sr. and Frieda Kraft. He loved to tell people that he was born in the same room that he slept in his whole life. Richard married Sylvia Neibauer on June 25, 1965, together they raised two children, Julie Kraft Schessler and Brad Kraft.
Eventually they bought the family farm that is located west of Billings and together they farmed, had a dairy, and still ranch today. You would always find Richard working around the farm, he would always say, “Work before play.” Richard enjoyed gardening, wood working, playing cards, and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids. One of his favorite pastimes was to play “last touch” with his grandkids. He was a member of the Elks and served as a director on the Cove ditch board.
Richard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sylvia, daughter Julie (Rob) Schessler of Laurel, Montana, and son Brad (Lori) Kraft of Billings; grandkids, Sam (Matt), Emilee (Tom), Heston (Jen), Makayla (Justin), Seth, and Anna; four great grandkids, Luke, Levi, Kendall, Harlee, and one soon to be fifth due in August; siblings, Ed Jr. (Roxie) Kraft, Robert (Kayrene) Kraft, James (Valorie) Kraft, Peggy (Ervin) Wood, and many nieces and nephews; and special friends Bob and Harley Hettinger.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Ed Sr. and Frieda Kraft, in-laws Dave and Lydia Neibauer, brother-in-law Clyde Shay, and sister-in-law Barbara Rogers.
Special thanks to the caregivers at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Open casket viewing will be at the visitation from 5 to 7 on Wednesday, January 24th, at the Smith Chapel in Laurel. The funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church on Thursday, January 25th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the service at the Mountview Cemetery in Billings, with a reception to follow at the Elks Club, 934 Lewis Ave. in Billings.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department or the Laurel FFA Alumni Association.
