The Laurel boys and girls teams are peaking at the right time leading up to arguably the biggest conference games in the early conference season with the boys on a three-game winning streak and the girls winning four straight.

Boys

The Laurel boys picked up two wins over the weekend to come into this week’s rivalry game with momentum.

Gaje Leischner and Camden Hill led the way in the 53-35 victory on the road against Sidney, having 20 and 16 points respectively. Dante Filpula Ankney added 10.

Coach Pat Hansen said the team “defended well during the game. It’s a hard place to play and we are happy to leave there with a win.”

Hansen said they struggled during their 43-37 victory against Glendive on Saturday.

“Glendive’s offensive and defensive execution was way better than ours.  We didn’t look to score in a confident way and struggled with the game time decisions.  I take the blame for this game. The poor execution and focus is on my shoulders. We must execute better down the stretch. We still did enough to win and I was proud of how the kids played through a difficult type of game, but this will catch up to us if our attention to detail doesn’t get better,” Hansen said.

Hill led the Locos in scoring with 16 points, and Leischner added 10.

Laurel is second in the conference at 3-1, behind only Hardin. They face Columbus at home tonight and then host perennial rival Billings Central Saturday night. The Locos are looking to beat the Rams in Laurel for the second year in a row after defeating them on a last-second shot last January.

Hansen is excited for Saturday, calling it a “great game for the kids [with a] wonderful atmosphere and tournament feeling they get to experience.  Everyone has their reason for this game and all those reasons added together make it the game it is. It should be another great one for the players, school and community.”

Girls

The Lady Locos are undefeated in the Eastern A conference (4–0) after picking up home wins against Sidney and Glendive last weekend.

On Friday they blew out Sidney 60–12 on the strength of three double digit scoring performances and nine Lady Locos scoring in the game. Riley Chapman had 14 points, Aspen Cotter 12 and Sammi Spitzer added 10.

On Saturday they stretched a five–point halftime lead into a 14 point victory, downing Glendive 46–32. Aspen Cotter led the team with 15 points, Spitzer had 14 and Paige O’Toole had seven.

Coach Amber Griffith likes some of the things she has seen in the team as of late, and acknowledged the rivalry game.

“We’re excited for the big game. Our girls have been playing well and this will be a good test for us. They’re deep in the post and they really look to get the ball inside every trip down the court. We’ll need to contain Moten-Schell and keep their bigs off the boards,” she said.

The Lady Rams come into tomorrow’s game at 3-1 in the Eastern A.
