Darrell.D. Magnus

MSGT Darrell D. Magnus born January 1, 1941. At 77 years old, he has gone home to be with his Lord after losing the battle with Mesothelioma lung cancer. This Vietnam veteran and retired Marine of 21 years was also know as the “Vertical Vegetable Engineer,” in Yellowstone county.  Darrell was a business man (Magnus Tree Removal) and mentor who will be greatly missed.  He has gone to cut God’s trees and will rejoin his fellow Marines and family members.  He will bring his own brand of humor, wisdom, dignity, honor and a sense of pride. Darrell will always be known as the “Bead Man” on the 4th of July in Laurel Montana. Darrell and May Magnus were a team of champions rewarded by trophies they received called family and friends.  Darrell’s true passion was being high in a tree, swinging on his ropes to make the “Vertical Vegetable” beautiful for others to see. Darrell knew each tree he ever trimmed and was proud of all of them. When introduced to Darrell most folks would say “It’s good to meet you;” Darrell would respond,  with a mischievous chuckle, “Its always good to meet me!” As a Catholic man, he was always willing to help and did whatever it took to get the job done. Darrell attended a Cum Christo retreat in 1989 and until recently always grouped with the guys every Tuesday morning. He played cards for over 30 years with this buddies at Riverside Hall in Laurel. Darrell had a lifetime friend in Adrian Juttner with whom he spent the last 25 summers in the mountains biking, hiking, camping and climbing glaciers.
He is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Magdalena Magnus, one brother Ray, and two sisters Myra and Mina. He is survived by his wife and soulmate Maybelle, three children Zina, Myron and (Melissa),  and Tammy and (Robert); eight grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and two more on the way.
Funeral services will be held on January 12, 2018 at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel, at 2 p.m. Internment will follow at Yellowstone National Cemetery. There will be a reception in the St. Anthony’s Church hall afterwards.
