Chief coroner retiring after 39 years of service

After 39 years of service to Yellowstone County, Lieutenant Bill Jones will be retiring from the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, effective Dec. 31.
Lt. Jones began his career with the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office in July 1978 as a Deputy Sheriff. Jones was later assigned to the Detective Division. In 1990, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and took over the responsibilities of the Coroner’s Office. In 2008, Lt. Jones was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant while remaining in charge of the Coroner’s office. Lt. Jones has spent the past 27 years as Yellowstone County’s Chief Coroner. For many years, Lt. Jones was also in charge of the Sheriff’s rescue boat and crew and participated in numerous Search and Rescue missions on the Yellowstone River.
As of Jan. 1, 2018, Chief Deputy Coroner Cliff Mahoney will take charge of the Coroner’s Office. Mahoney is a 14-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and has spent the past few years as Lt. Jones’ assistant. Corporal Richard Hoffman, who is also a Deputy Coroner, will transfer from the Patrol division to the Coroner’s Office and act as Mahoney’s assistant.
Lt. Jones was honored this morning, Thursday, at a ceremony and open house at the county courthouse.
