Chamber players to perform

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, the Yellowstone Chamber Players will present a recital of music for strings featuring the Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg and the Abdelazer Suite by Henry Purcell at Mayflower Church, corner of Rheberg and Poly Drive in Billings.
Joining a string orchestra of local musicians will be guest artists Margaret Nichols Baldridge, violin, and Fern Glass Boyd, cello.
Margaret Nichols Baldridge has performed around the United States and abroad with the Sapphire Trio and the Montana Piano Trio.  She is professor of violin and viola at the University of Montana, and is concertmaster of the Missoula Symphony and  Leader of the String Orchestra of the Rockies.
Fern Glass Boyd is professor of cello at the University of Montana, and is principal cellist of the Missoula Symphony and the Artistic Director of the String Orchestra of the Rockies.
Deservedly one of the most popular compositions in the repertoire for string orchestra, the Holberg Suite is a charming set of baroque dance movements updated by Grieg’s lyric romanticism. Purcell’s well-known suite of incidental music from the play Abdelazer, or the Moor’s Revenge also features a number of baroque dances as well as airs and a brilliant overture. Its Rondeau is the instantly recognizable theme of Benjamin Britton’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, and has been featured in a number of movie and television soundtracks including Pride and Prejudice.
The Hornpipe was featured in the ballroom scene from the 2007 movie Becoming Jane. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students. For further information contact Kathy Griffin 245-5989.
