Joliet FFA competes in National Convention

The Joliet FFA chapter proudly represented Montana in the Parliamentary Procedure Leadership Development Event at the 90th National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 24-28. Parliamentary Procedure is a competition based on correctly conducting a meeting. The team is made up of five delegates and a chairman. Allie Blain presided as chair while Kala Bertolino, Noah Grewell, Morgan Harris, Shane Milton and Nicole Stevenson were members. They had to present a meeting with five required motions, consisting of two incidental motions, two subsidiary motions and one privileged motion or a motion which brings another motion back before the assembly. Along with the required motions, each member had to make an additional motion. Each member debated at least four times throughout the presentation. The presentation lasted for 11 minutes. Before the presentation, the team has one minute to prepare without communication between the members. In addition to the demonstration, the team took three individual written tests and completed a team problem.
The first test consisted of finding five quotes from Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised within the thirty minute time frame. The second test taken was a multiple choice test based on general knowledge of Parliamentary Procedure. The third test was new to the competition and required students to take a practicum in which they watched a mock meeting and took notes, then they used these notes to answer questions about the meeting minutes. After the completion of each round, the team demonstrated their knowledge of proper meeting conduct by acting as Professional Parliamentarians correcting a scenario with parliamentary errors.
The Montana team advanced to the Semifinal Round. This consisted of the top 12 teams in the United States and Puerto Rico. By advancing, the Joliet team earned a Gold Ranking. Three of the team members, Allie Blain, Shane Milton, and Nicole Stevenson, became Nationally Accredited Parliamentarians by the Society of Agricultural Education Parliamentarians by scoring higher than an 80 percent on the written test. The whole team was granted membership into the National Association of Parliamentarians for their hard work and dedication to Parliamentary Procedure. The team won the state competition in March 2017 in order to advance to the national Leadership Development Event.
