Scammers impersonate Yellowstone County Sheriff’s deputies

According to an alert sent by the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, several residents received calls last week from a person or persons claiming to be an officer. The caller claims a warrant has been issued for the subject’s arrest. The targets are being told that they did not appear for a federal court jury selection and will be charged with a felony if they do not pay the required fine. They are being told how to transfer money using gift cards to avoid arrest. The suspect is claiming to be a Sergeant or Lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office. In some cases, the caller I.D. may be indicating the calls originated from the Sheriff’s Office. This is a scam.
The Sheriff’s Office is not and does not contact individuals by phone to collect money for warrants or to deal with federal court issues. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up the phone.
