Farm-to-Lunchroom beef program launched at Fromberg

The Fromberg FFA has implemented a new program which brings local beef to the students of Fromberg School.
Students first met with Trustees this fall to discuss the possibility of approaching local producers to donate and provide local, quality beef for use in the lunch program. They researched the idea by contacting schools in the state who started similar programs and learned cattle or other meat products need to be processed in a USDA approved facility. Donated beef can be used as a tax deduction for producers and the school would be responsible for the processing fees.
While it might seem like the program would be a savings to the school, students learned that the costs will be comparable to purchasing through the bid program. However, there will be no comparison to the quality of the meat products the students will be eating.
The next step included working with the school cook to determine the types of cuts that would work best and purchasing additional freezer space. The FFA sent letters out to local producers and put an article in the school newsletter. They received immediate and positive responses from several local producers. The first beef donated by the Yedlicka Ranch is being processed now and will be in the school freezer in a couple of weeks. The Yeager Ranch and Al and Barbara Bicker also made the commitment to donate, and set up processing for December and January.
The FFA has determined that four to five beef will feed the entire school for one year and hopes other producers will commit to the program as well. The FFA plans to cook donated prime rib roasts for the FFA Banquet to showcase the new program and thank those who have donated. Administrators hope this program will ensure that Fromberg students are provided with quality food from local producers that are famous for raising it, and that the program continues for years to come.
