Vote Yes for Laurel’s Future

“Laurel School District voters we need your help! You will soon be receiving ballots to vote on school bonds at the elementary and high school level to address overcrowding across our district. In the 2016/17 School year Laurel’s actual student enrollment was 115 students over what was projected just five years earlier. One-hundred and fifteen students may not seem like many.  Divvy those 115 students up and that breaks down to adding between eight and nine students to each grade. Doesn’t seem like much? But consider that most of our elementary and middle school classrooms are already at, or just over, state standards. There simply isn’t room for more students. Every indicator seems to reveal that growth in our area will continue. As a substitute teacher and parent in the district, I am seeing first hand how this is impacting our children. They are meeting for reading groups in the nurse’s office. They are meeting in the hallways and entryways for math help. Every inch is being utilized, but we are simply bursting at the seams, and it hinders learning.
A tax increase isn’t something anyone enjoys and business owners and ag producers end up paying more than the average home owner. This is no small cost and we recognize that. We believe we have designed a plan that allows for continued growth, and a plan for the future, without added “fluff” or waste of your tax dollars. Admittedly, school funding is an imperfect science and may have reached a crossroad where major change needs to occur. However, while working toward that, let’s not forget that our schools need help now using the process they currently have to ask for it. Please vote Yes for Laurel’s Future!”
