The Laurel Locomotives girls’ soccer team continued on a track to a state championship game by defeating the Whitefish Pilots 1-0 on a windy Saturday in Laurel.
The only score of the game came off a header from Gracey Willis off a corner kick at the beginning of the second half. Maeson Cotter served the kick up to Willis.
“The Whitefish goalie was tall and talented but we kept chipping away,” said Laurel coach, Aloma Jess. The Bulldogs had eight corner kicks in the contest versus Whitefish’s 3 and the 20-mile-an-hour wind had a lot to do with the corner kicks.
Laurel controlled the game and coach Jess kept reminding her players that the wind was impacting both teams.
“They were getting frustrated at times,” Jess said.
Even though the wind was an equalizer, Laurel controlled the tempo of the game and had 15 shots on goal to Whitefish’s eight.
“It wasn’t the type of game we wanted to play as the wind really played havoc with our communication and possession,” she said.
Now the girls turn their attention to Hamilton.
“We are anxious to play Hamilton and get back into our possession mojo and high pressure that we displayed against Belgrade in the play-in game,” she said.
Paige O’Toole continued to have a great game and was only tested twice. The last time the two teams met, she had some acrobatic saves to ice the game.
If Laurel and Central both win on Saturday, the State championship game will be in Billings next Saturday at Rocky Mountain College.
