First year Laurel resident and middle school 8th grader Wyatt Ostler capped off an undefeated cross country season on Saturday.
Ostler won all six middle school cross country meets he participated in this year, including the Eastern A Classic on Saturday, where he posted a personal record of 8:35 (5:21 mile pace) in the 1.6 mile race.
Ostler, who moved to Laurel from Dayton, Wyo. this past year, is only in his second year of cross country. He started running at Tongue River Middle School as a seventh grader and said he finished tops on his team, “but my best finish in a meet was third.”
Running is in his genes, as his mom is an ultra-runner (loosely defined as someone who runs races longer than marathon length).
“She runs marathons and 100-milers,” Ostler said.
He also said his dad was “super fast in the 800m in high school and could run the 5K in 16:20, before he went into the military.”
Ostler said his training over the summer consisted of “playing basketball for four or five hours every day.”
Along with running cross country this fall, he was also a point guard and wing for the Laurel Traxx traveling basketball team. Ostler says they traveled to Helena, Missoula and Bozeman for games.
He plans to play basketball and run track for the Middle School, as well as getting some snowboarding in this winter.
“I think we may get a pass at Red Lodge,” he said.
Laurel High School Cross Country Coach Amy Caldeira is looking forward to welcoming him to the varsity team next year.
“He is a hard worker who often runs with the varsity boys team.”
