Turnovers cost Locos in Sidney

Laurel led Sidney in most statistical categories on Friday but fell to the Eagles in a battle of the top two teams in the Eastern A conference, 21-12.

The Locos held Sidney to one offensive score in the game but their defense scored twice on a blocked punt and a pick-six at the end of the game.

Laurel jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter on a team known for holding opponents to single digits.

Their first score came on what Coach Mike Ludwig called, “probably Logan’s [Kennedy] best punt of the year,” which bounced off a Sidney player’s helmet and was recovered by Gaje Leischner in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Locos scored again on a Gage Hull to Leischner 37-yard TD pass three minutes later. Laurel missed both extra points and had a 12-0 lead.

Sidney blocked a Laurel punt and recovered the ball in the end zone to pull within 5, after a successful extra point.

With time running down in the second quarter Sidney scored on a short pass and took the halftime lead, 14-12.

After a scoreless third quarter, and most of the fourth, Laurel had a good drive to set them up to take the lead, but a fumble inside the 1 gave Sidney the ball.

Laurel got the ball back for one last drive, but a Sidney interception and return for a TD ended the game, 21-12.

The Locos defense held the Eagles to 93 yards rushing, but three interceptions and a fumble were too much for the offense to overcome.

Laurel is now in a tie for second in the Eastern A with one-loss Billings Central.

Ludwig said despite the loss, the team played well.

“The defense played well and they traveled well. Turnovers have been our Achilles heel all year and I told them if the pattern continued it could catch up to them.”

This week the Locos (6-1) are back to business and focusing on Hardin (2-5).

“We are working on taking care of the football and making better decisions,” Ludwig said.

Senior night is tomorrow against Hardin, with kickoff at 7 p.m. at Laurel Sports Complex.
