Joliet overcame a 24-point third quarter deficit to take down the undefeated Tri-City Titans in Hobson on Saturday, 42-36.
The J-Hawks were down 12-36 late in the third, before scoring the final 30 points to nip the Titans and move back into a tie for 1st in the Southern C (8-Man) with Ennis, Lone Peak and Tri-City at 5-1.
The rally started at the end of the third on a 50-yard Taylor Rowlison pass to Rylan Olson. The duo connected on the 2-point conversion, bringing the J-Hawks within 16 to start the fourth quarter.
Joliet struck again on their next series with a 77-yard Brett Robinson rush to bring them within 10 points.
On the ensuing kickoff, the J-Hawks got the ball back on what Coach George Warburton described as “a perfect onside kick by Declan Sielaff.”
Joliet scored on a 28-yard halfback pass from Robinson to Olson, and then Robinson ran in the 2-point conversion to pull within two, 34-36.
With the clock winding down in the fourth, and down 2, the defense stepped up again with a “huge blocked punt” by Grant O’Rourke. After Robinson ran it in from the 6 and Oswald scored on a 2-point conversion rush, the J-Hawks had their first lead since the opening quarter, 42-36.
The Joliet defense forced a fumble on the next possession and recovered it, ending the game and vaulting the J-Hawks back to the top of the division.
Coach George Warburton said the kids never quit and the defense came up big in the second half, and especially the fourth quarter.
“Defensive Coordinator Rob Robinson made adjustments at halftime that made the difference between winning and losing.”
Taylor Rowlison was 6-12 passing for 127 yards and two TDs.
Brett Robinson had 15 carries for 200 yards with three rushing TDs of 49, 77 and 5 yards. He had two receptions for 50 yards, including a 45-yard TD catch, and threw one pass for a 22-yard TD.
Rylan Olson caught five passes for 77 yards, including 19 and 22-yard TD receptions
On defense, O’Rourke had four solo tackles and assisted on 11. He added a sack, a fumble recovery and the monster punt block to seal the game.
Robinson had nine solo tackles and assisted on 12. Trey Oswald had a fumble recovery, and four solo and seven tackle assists. Sielaff had three solo tackles and five assists.
Warburton said, “We are going to use this momentum and energy against Lone Peak.”
The J-Hawks (5-1) face the Lone Peak Big Horns (5-1) for their Homecoming game tomorrow at 7 p.m.
