After a nail biter against Harlowton, Park City coasted through their Homecoming game against Gardiner, blasting the Big Horns 60-6 on Friday night.
Coach Mark Rathbum said the Panthers played “a much better overall game than the first two.”
The Panther’s Carson Baker was nearly unstoppable, picking up 148 yards rushing on a mere eight carries and scoring on half of them. The sophomore running back scored four times in the first half on runs of 37, 25, 20 and 15 yards. Junior Lance Courtney also scored twice on 8-yard and 1-yard runs.
The Panther defense stuffed the Big Horn offense in the first half and Park City took a 38-0 lead into the break.
When Gardiner kicked off to start the second half, senior end and defensive back Rylan Gauthier picked up where he left off against Harlo and made another huge play, scoring on a 70-yard kickoff return to put the Panthers up 46-0, after the successful 2-point conversion.
Gardiner got their lone score of the game when they returned a Panther fumble 75 yards for a TD.
On the ensuing kick off, Gauthier matched the yardage with another kickoff return for a touchdown with 8:52 left in the game; this time for 75 yards.
The Panthers pumped the brakes on their offense and the defense held Big Horns scoreless, resulting in the 60-6 blowout.
“The seniors set the tone for our team from the start of the Homecoming game. The offense stepped up, the defense played very well and special teams contributed positively,” Rathbun said.
The 2-1 Panthers head up to Lavina this week to play the 0-3 Broadview/Lavina Pirates on Friday at 7 p.m.
Rathbun said the team will remain focused and “continue to work and get better this week.”
