Outlook photo by David Keyes. The Laurel boys soccer team will be home this Friday and Saturday after a successful road trip. This photo was taken during practice last week, prior to their trip to Frenchtown and Missoula.

New tactics, new team.

LHS boys’ soccer coach Leroy VanderPool unleashed both this past weekend and earned a split on a tough road trip.

“We changed a lot of what we do and wanted to surprise our opponents this season, we sure did that this weekend,” said VanderPool.

The Locos host Stevensville on Friday at 3 p.m. for the girls and 5 p.m. for the boys.

On Saturday, the boys play Corvallis at 10 a.m. and the girls are at noon.

After giving up an early goal in under two minutes, the Locos scored goals by Luis Vega and Kaleb Ripley to go into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Locos have completely changed their attack and Frenchtown found some seams in the defense the second half to score three unanswered goals to pull out a 4-2 win.

“We have fixed our coverage mistake and are moving forward,” he said.

“This game is what we have been training for,” said a pleased coach VanderPool after thoroughly dominating Missoula Loyola on Saturday.

The offensive output was the most a Laurel team has scored in VanderPool’s tenure. While the team features seven legitimate scoring threats, Vega’s hat trick – including three of the last four goals scored in the game – sealed it.

The data-driven coach also was impressed with his team’s completion of 153 passes in the game.

The team is excited to show the home crowd what the new and improved Locos are all about this Friday and Saturday.
