Best of Laurel is great reminder to look local

Word-of-mouth is the best advertising.
That must appear blasphemous coming from a guy who runs the local newspaper, printing operation and websites so I have to include a caveat.
It is true, when people talk up a business on Facebook or in person, it can really have an impact on the cash register. There is nothing better than sharing a good experience and inviting others to try it out as well.
This would be great if the world revolved around only about spreading positive information and reviews.
The problem is word-of-mouth can cut both ways.
Everyone knows bad news spreads faster than good and that is unfortunate. With Facebook and the like, bad news travels at light speed.
This is where advertising, marketing and the Best of Laurel come in.
In today’s Outlook you will find a ballot with more than 80 categories on which to vote.
Each of the categories provide an opportunity for you to offer up word-of-mouth advertising about a local service or business or hard-working neighbor.
The Best of Laurel was designed a few years ago to raise awareness of what Laurel has to offer. Unfortunately, many locals don’t give the local businesses a chance before ordering something from Amazon or popping over to Billings.
It is great to see the Best of Laurel’s popularity continue to increase. We had more votes last year than the first two years combined. It is also great to see all of the Best of Laurel window clings, certificates and plaques in our businesses.
What has really set the Best of Laurel apart in my mind though, is the fact that people hold onto the special edition and use it for a reference for themselves or guests.
That is the power of word-of-mouth.
We changed a few categories, deleted a few as well in this ballot. We also debated whether to change the name of the contest to Laurel’s Favorites versus the Best of Laurel. We kept the old name.
Please spend a few minutes to give your local merchants and friends a vote of confidence. We hope that by filling out the ballots people will realize there is a lot going on in Laurel and we are all in it together.
Remember to only use original ballots from the Outlook and that the deadline is Aug. 28.
Wishing everyone good luck and good news.
