Shakespeare in the Park returns to Laurel on Monday with a performance of “Macbeth.”
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks is one of the oldest Shakespeare companies in the United States, beginning in 1973. This year the actors are performing 76 shows in 61 communities while traveling nearly 8,000 miles on the 15 week tour which began June 14.
Ten professional actors for this season’s shows were chosen out of approximately 500 applicants, with auditions held in Bozeman, Chicago and Minneapolis.
“Macbeth” is directed by Kevin Asselin, executive artistic director for MSIP, who said the play is set in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are limited and power is vital for survival.
“[The play] serves as a vehicle to explore the issues of natural disasters, climate change, and how some of these issues relate to our audience: namely drought, high temperatures [and] forest fires,” Asselin said.
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks is not just “grounded in the pursuit of bringing live, free theatre to underserved communities, it also brings audience members of all generations together in the experience of enjoying live theater in local parks,” Asselin said.
This year’s performance begins Monday at 6 p.m. on the Laurel High School practice football field.
