Thanks for Memorial Day flags

My heartfelt thanks to all who put out the flags on the Veteran’s graves. It made me sad, but happy, to see one flying at my father’s—Elmer K. Newman—grave. He served in both World War I and World War II.

School administration
seeking input

In June of 2016, the Board hired L’Heureux Page Werner as Educational Facility Consultants to guide and develop a 20-year Master Plan addressing current and future education and facility needs. After six community meetings, a community survey, and numerous school level meetings, the Educational Facility Planning committee has developed the following proposal for community review.
South School will be repurposed into the Laurel Career and Technical Campus to create pathways for our high school students in expanding job and career opportunities upon graduation. Renovations will occur at West School to add classroom space and a gymnasium to become a K-2 building. Land will be purchased to build a new elementary school for our 3-5 students. Graff School becomes the new administration building. The Administration Building and Old Gym will be put up for sale. The Middle School becomes a 6-8 school which addresses the overcrowding issue at that building. The High School is renovated to create more classroom space and an auxiliary gym for its growing enrollment. The Transportation Department will be moved to the new elementary school site creating more usable space at the high school. All sites will address traffic flow issues. Further, all schools are designed to address current overcrowding as well as expected growth.
The School Board is seeking input and feedback on this proposal at the June 12, board meeting. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at 410 Colorado Avenue at 5:30 p.m. The public and community are invited and encouraged to attend.
