Laurel athlete Jaxson Wittmeyer on Montana Elite Baseball team

For the third time in a row since its conception, Montana Elite Baseball has been invited and is heading back to the USA Baseball 14U National Team Championship West in Arizona this July. After statewide tryouts, third year head coach Travis Krauss selected 16 players from eight communities across the state of Montana. To put it into perspective, in order for young Danny Dunn from Eureka, to personally congratulate his new teammate Jayden Menable in Miles City, he would have to travel a distance of 600 miles and drive 10 hours on a two lane highway, just to shake hands.
The rest of the Montana Elite Baseball’s 2017 team includes Jaxson Wittmeyer from Laurel; two sets of brothers from Billings, DJ and Toquanan Bergen III; and Caden and McClean Dowler. Colton Chavez and Max Keller are also from Billings. Preston Fliehman is from Bozeman; Carson Bitney is from Conrad; and Blake Franklin from Kalispell. The final three players are from Missoula and are Jarek Bodlovic, Charlie Kirgin, and Parker Lindsay.
Players from all corners of Montana come together June 27, at the University of Montana to practice for a two-and-half days before heading off to play a week of baseball at the highest level in 100- degree-plus heat in Major League Baseball’s finest spring training complexes in Glendale, Peoria, and Goodyear, Ariz. Last year, Quinn Sullivan of Butte was the first Montana youth baseball player to make a USA Baseball team. Quinn was chosen to the 14U National Developmental Team and was flown to Raleigh, North Carolina for the week long development camp and to compete against the 15U National Team..
MEB hopes to continue providing the opportunity for Montana youth to make USA Baseball National Teams as well the chance to play on the 2020 Olympic Team. The organization’s end goal is to have one if not two kids from Montana on the USA Baseball Olympic Team in Japan in 2020.
