Six members from the Northwest College Trap and Skeet Club traveled to San Antonio, Texas, March 28-April 2, to compete in the 2017 Association of College Unions International Collegiate Clay Target Championships. That included Spencer Drange of Laurel.
According to Ken Beebe, advisor for the NWC Trap and Skeet Club, approximately 750 students from across the country attended this year’s championship shoot.
“Every student shot their personal best at the competition, and the competition was tough,” Beebe said. “We have an extremely inexperienced group of students this year with half having shot trap and skeet less than four months. What they lacked in experience, they made up for in dedication and drive to get better.”
NWC competitors at this year’s contest were Tanner Barngrover of Powell, Michael Creel of Wapiti, Drange of Laurel, Micah McClure of Ronan, Mont., Sasa Starkjohann of La Barge, Wyo. and Connor Watson of Townsend, Mont.
Events at the ACUI Collegiate Clay Target Championships include American Skeet, American Trap, International Skeet, International Trap, Five Stand and Sporting Clays.
In International Skeet team standings, Barngrover, Drange and McClure finished in third place in Division Four with a combined score of 170.
Three members of the NWC team were ranked in the men’s high overall standings. Out of 421 individual rankings, McClure finished 249th with a score of 448, Barngrover took 337th place with 412 points and Drange placed 375th with 388 points.
In American Trap, McClure, Barngrover, Creel and Watson each hit 25 out of 25 targets in at least one round of competition. Watson went on to shoot 50 for 50 in American Trap. Starkjohann shot her personal best with 23 out of 25 in International Trap and 22 out of 25 in American Trap.
