Lady Panthers take 3rd in District 6C tournament

The Lady Panthers finished in third place at the District 6C tournament last weekend.

It was business as usual Wednesday night as the Lady Panthers took on the Lady Scouts of Bridger in both teams’ first game of the 2017 District 6C tournament in Huntley Project. The Lady Panthers were on the board first with a 2 from Shelby Branstetter, a free throw from Shelby Kluth and another 2 from MacKinzie Verke.
The full court pressure was too much for the Lady Scouts. The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Scouts in all quarters; the second quarter difference was 14. The Panthers went on to win 58-23

The Panthers had their work cut out for them the next night as they faced the Lady Pirates of Broadview/Lavina.
The teams had split during the season with both teams winning one each by the same margin of 4 points. The Panthers got on the board first with 5 from Shelby Kluth and a steal and bucket from Shelby Branstetter putting the Panthers up by 7 before B/L took a time-out to sort things out.
The Pirates settled into their game after that and hit a 3 followed by a 2 before the Panthers could get back on the board. The first quarter ended with the Panthers up 3.
The second started with 2 from MacKinzie Verke but was answered by the Pirates with a long 3. Shelby Branstetter started to bring the heat but the quarter continued to be dominated by the Pirates outscoring the Panthers by 9.
The Panthers went into half down by 6. Both teams came out playing good defense keeping the score unchanged for several minutes.
Shelby Branstetter continued to rack up the points but it just wasn’t enough to pull the Panthers any closer than 10 at the end of the 3rd. The Panthers were able to climb back within 5 but they ran out of time; Pirates 56-Panthers 51.

This put the Panthers up against the Lady Huskies in loser out competition. Both teams struggled getting into a rhythm in the first half. Pressure by the Panthers held the Huskies to only 7 points in the first but they came back in the second to tie the score going into half time 18-18.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point for the Panthers. Drives to the hoop from MacKinzie Verke combined with rebounding from her teammates allowed the Panthers to outscore the Huskies 20-1.
The Panthers went on to win 46-30. This win assured them a trip to the Divisional tournament in Laurel it was just a matter of if they went in 3rd place or 4th.

The Consolation game matched the Lady Panthers against the Plenty Coups Lady Warriors. The Warriors scored the first 5 points but they were soon answered by the Panthers with a 3 pointer and then another 2 from Tehya Ray along with 2 each from Shelby McMillen and MacKinzie Verke.
A 3 from Shelby Kluth and a 2 from Shelby Branstetter put the Panthers up 1 at the end of the first. MacKinzie Verke and Tehya Ray continued to attack the basket putting the Panthers up by 5 going into half.
The third quarter found both teams doing everything they could to get the advantage but it ended in even scoring; 10 each. The Panthers came out in the 4th hungry for that 3rd place trophy. 2 points by Shelby Branstetter followed by a steal for Tehya Ray which lead to a lay-up for MacKinzie Verke set the tone for the remainder of the 4th.
The Panthers went on to take home that trophy by a score of 54-44. Good Job Panthers. Good Luck in Divisionals. The Lady Panthers will take on the Lady Longhorns of Wibaux Thursday night at 8:00.
