LMS has successful evacuation drill

The annual evacuation/relocation drill at the Laurel Middle School involved  680 students and 60 adults, according to Assistant Principal Sarah Sheldon.
“Everyone evacuates like a fire drill,” she noted, adding, “We relocated to high school gym. Everyone was accounted for again and, then we returned to the school.” The drill went exactly as planned with all the students and staff evacuated safely, relocated to the high school and everyone accounted for within 20 minutes. The whole drill lasted 35, Sheldon said..
The annual drill was instituted by the school district in case of an emergency several years ago. Staff and administrators attended a workshop designed for educators specifically in case of a weather or other event that could make the school building unsafe or uninhabitable.
“We also have a reunification protocol, should we ever have to end the day from another location,” Sheldon said. She coordinates the drill, but the safety procedures are discussed monthly by the LMS Montana Behavior Institute team as part of the school’s protocol for keeping a safe learning environment.
This was the school’s fourth drill in the past five years.
