Joliet handed loss by Shepherd

The Joliet J-Hawks showed they have the opportunity to feature a highly explosive offensive unit throughout the 2014 Class B football season.

Unfortunately for head coach Dewey Allen and the less than two dozen J-Hawks on the roster, they also confirmed one of their coaches largest fears  in Joliet’s season-opening 43-7 defeat in Shepherd on Friday night.
“We haven’t been able to really scrimmage because we don’t have the numbers to accommodate it,” Allen told the Laurel Outlook when interviewed for a season preview story two weeks ago. “We’re going to be playing a lot of kids both ways.”
The J-Hawks and Mustangs  exchanged punts throughout much of the opening quarter until Shepherd running back Jared Iffland scampered into the west end-zone from about 20 yards to the Mustangs up 6-0 following a missed extra point.
The J-Hawks answered quickly on their ensuing possession, taking a 7-6 lead when Levi Mydland scored on one-yard quarterback plunge. Mydland’s sneak capped an eight-play drive highlighted by a fourth-down conversion near midfield that kept the chains moving.
But from there it was all Shepherd as they began to assert their dominance with the ground attack as they scored on the final four possessions of the half to take a 33-7 lead into the locker room.
Iffland finished the half with 110 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns as Joliet’s lack of depth and fresh legs became obvious.
Joliet (0-1) travels to Boulder (1-0) Friday night.
