Yellowstone County Museum’s grand opening event in June

Yellowstone County Museum is planning a Summer Grand Opening this month. The community event will mark the official opening of “Waiting for the Earth to Move: the 1890 Ghost Dance” and other exhibits that have been under construction this spring.
The Summer Grand Opening is scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event and museum admission are free. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase lunch at the museum.
In a time of cultural upheaval, the Ghost Dance ceremony offered hope to many tribes. Its guiding principle was a threefold promise: the return of the buffalo, the resurrection of their ancestors, and the creation of a new paradise-like earth where they could live according to their own traditions. The exhibit will feature dance shirts, musical instruments, and other objects – all decorated with vivid and moving Ghost Dance symbols.
“When we had the soft opening in February, ‘Waiting for the Earth to Move’ was already the nation’s largest public display of Ghost Dance regalia,” explains YCM Curator, Kathy Barton, “but we have even more objects to add for the grand opening.”
Barton has been busy improving other areas of the museum, as well. To make space for the Ghost Dance exhibit, YCM’s historic firearms have moved into a new, larger room. The relocation means more guns and weaponry can be displayed.
Some of those guns include World War I era rifles and machine guns, which will join soldiers’ and nurses’ uniforms, trench art, and more in a new exhibit about Yellowstone County during the Great War.
“We hope that people will be excited to see what we’ve been up to,” says Barton. “This is really their museum – their stories – and the upcoming event is a great way to participate in that.”
Yellowstone County Museum is located on the Rims near Billings Logan International Airport and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. There are parking spots at YCM, and additional parking can be found at the airport short-term lot. For more information, contact Yellowstone County Museum at 256-6811.
