Woodden Tournament pits Panthers against Joliet and Red Lodge with mixed results

The Panthers were on the road again this weekend traveling to the Woodden Memorial Tournament in Red Lodge. The Lady Panthers took on the J-Hawks from Joliet Friday night. The Panthers outscored the J-Hawks in the first quarter but the J-Hawks came back in the second quarter to tie the score at half 20-20. The third quarter started with a pass from MacKenzie Verke inside to Shelby Branstetter for 2. Branstetters’ 10 points from the paint combined with Verkes’ and Shelby Kluths’ 12 points behind the arc proved to be too much for the J-Hawks. A free-throw made by Bethany Vandoren late in the fourth put the panthers up by 5. Joliet had a couple of chances at the line but were unable to capitalize and their misses were rebounded by Tehya Ray to give the ball back to the Panthers. Joliet got the ball back and with 15 seconds left Nowak drained a 3, putting the Hawks within 1. Verke was fouled on the in-bound pass which sent her to the line with 2 seconds remaining. Verke made both free-throws which ended the game, Panthers winning 42-39.

The Panthers just couldn’t get things going their way in the third either getting outscored 14-5. A three pointer by Red Lodges’ #4 Kelly at the buzzer gave Red Lodge the win 60-39.
