Waste not, want not

The BLM and the EPA recently finalized two new standards that will reduce methane gas releases from oil and gas wells.
Drilling for oil often unlocks deposits of methane, which get released as a waste product. Because of weak regulation, enormous amounts of methane get flared, vented, or leaked in oil fields all across the West. It might be used to generate electricity or heat homes—but instead, it’s simply wasted.
The new BLM and EPA standards will prevent this waste. These standards will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect public health, and conserve a valuable natural resource that could be used to power our economy. The BLM and EPA standards are smart and responsible, and I can’t imagine how anyone could be against them.  But Donald Trump is our president now, and everything is up for grabs. Trump seems intent on rolling back standards that Westerners have wanted for years, without regard for the environment or just plain common sense.
Congress votes on one of these standards—the BLM rule—this week. Unless we step up and defend them, things will remain as they are: natural gas will continue to be wasted, our air will grow increasingly polluted, our health endangered, and our climate threatened.
Join me in contacting Senators Jon Tester and Steve Daines today. Let’s remind them that Montanans aren’t a wasteful bunch.
