Walter Joki

Walter Joki

Then, when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done, and the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there. On June 8, 2017 Walter A. Joki was called up Yonder to meet his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his wife and children.
Walter Joki, a second-generation Finlander, was born in Red Lodge, Mont., in the home of a Finnish midwife on March 24, 1929, to Brynolf August Joki and Vienna Katri (Kotka) Joki. He was the first born of two, his brother Leonard born 22 months later.
He was raised on a 480-acre farm on the East Fox Bench. That is where he learned a good work ethic that carried with him throughout his life. He entered first grade not knowing any English and attended Clear Creek School through the eighth grade. He trapped and worked for his neighbors.
On March 7, 1951, he was sworn into the Army at the age of 22, during the Korean conflict. He was in the 119th Transportation Port Company in Seattle. He was discharged March 7, 1953.
After his discharge, Walter met the love of his life, Phyllis (Pat) Teeples in Luther, Mont. They were wed on September 19, 1953, in Red Lodge. They remained faithfully married for 63 years. To this union were added four children, Jim, Jerry, Jody and Ron. Walter knew the heartache of loss with the passing of Ron at age 15 in a car accident and Jerry at age 27 in a railroad accident.
In March of 1950, Walter went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad in Laurel and retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in July of 1990. Walter was a Carman while working on the railroad which included freight car repair, write-up man, and cook and transporter for the Cat Pack. After retirement, he enjoyed his mornings at the Owl Café where he formed many lasting friendships over the last 60 years.
Walter was a naturally gifted man and avid reader. He self taught himself to fix appliances, repair small engines, smoke fish, play musical instruments, and built his home. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do!
Walter is survived by his wife Pat; his children Jim Joki of Casper, Wyo., and Jody (Mark) Carlson of Laurel; grandchildren Kristyn (Chuck) Knight and Ben (Kelly) Carlson of Billings; great-grandchildren Cadden Knight and Addelyn and Ella Carlson.
Special thanks to the staff at Parkview Care Center and Compassus Hospice Care especially Teresa, Della, and Barb.
Cremation has taken place at the request of Walter. Memorial services will be Monday June 19, at 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Laurel. Interment will follow at Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel.
Memorials may be given to Castle Rock Baptist Camp, c/o First Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel.
