As quiet as it is in the Laurel Library, there is always activity: Folks are using the computers, looking up their genealogy, doing homework or curled up in a cozy spot reading a good book. Library Director Nancy Schmidt and her staff hope to keep it that way. Which is why the upcoming annual book sale is so important.

“We got less mills in the budget than expected,” Schmidt said. “So we can pay wages and benefits, but that’s about it.”

Library personnel are generally paid less than other city staff, although two staff members have applied for union membership. “That would mean some of our staff would make about double what the rest earn if it goes through,” Schmidt said.

Funds from the sale of the books will go into the Laurel Public Library Foundation Fund and will be there if necessary.

“Our readers and supporters have been so generous,” the director said pointing out stacks of boxes of books for the sale. “And, our shed is full, too.”

The sale will be conducted a little differently this year to manage safety and social distancing. The sale will continue over two weeks, beginning Monday Oct. 19 through Oct. 24 and resume Monday Oct. 26 through Oct. 31.

“We’ll be putting out new books everyday,” she said. “So folks can come find new treasures every time they shop.”

Five patrons will be limited to the sale area at any one time and face masks are required. Book sale hours will be Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All book sales are by donation. So grab a sack or a box and get your reading on, all while supporting Laurel’s Public Library, one of most universally-liked and used facility in the city.
