Shooter drill success

According to Dan Gatley who sent information to the Outlook on behalf of Laurel High School, the active intruder drill went as expected on Wednesday, April 26.
Parents and citizens had been forewarned of the drill and there were no unexpected delays or problems despite police and fire personnel being on-duty at the Helena Chemical fire just prior to the drill.
Per the planned drill activities, an active intruder was reported to have entered the high school sometime in the morning. Upon discovery of the intruder the school began lockdown protocol. First responders were notified and arrived to neutralize the danger, tend to victims and clear the area. The entire drill lasted about 45 minutes.
First responders, including Laurel Police Department officers, Laurel Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and EMS personnel were pleased with how the school went into action and followed procedure, according to Gately.
After the drill the students and staff had an opportunity to discuss with the first responders how the drill went, how they felt about the handling of the faux emergency and what could be done next time to improve protocols in an emergency.
Gatley said the guidance school officials received from Laurel Police officers, firefighters and EMTs made the event less stressful for all involved and lead to a positive outcome and good learning experience.
