Severe weather training in Joliet

The National Weather Service from Billings will be in Joliet next week for Severe Storm Spotter Training. The Thursday, May 11 training is free and no registration is required. The training is from 6-8 p.m. and will be at the Joliet Fire Station at 129 N. Main St.
The National Weather Service relies on trained volunteers to supplement doppler radar information on severe storms and tornadoes. These dedicated individuals volunteer their time to learn about and detect severe weather. Their valuable cooperation is important in the warning process. Weather reports from trained spotters are used along with doppler radar data to issue warnings of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.
The Joliet Spotter Training classes will cover topics discussing severe thunderstorms that produce damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes and flash floods. Severe weather and lightning safety will also be discussed. More details of the program and the full schedule is online at
https://www.weather.gov/byz/spotter_training
Two online Webinars will be conducted Thursday, May 18, from 1-2:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. Registration is required but the class is free and those interested can learn from the comfort of work or home. The class will cover the basics of identifying and reporting severe thunderstorms to the National Weather Service. Once registered, enrollees will receive an email with login details and reminders
