On Monday night the Laurel School Board passed the bond resolution and the option agreement for purchase of property for the new middle school.
The $52,563,000 bond addresses the need for constructing, improving, renovating and furnishing schools in the Elementary district to accommodate student enrollment and includes acquiring approximately 30 acres for construction of a new elementary school and converting Graff elementary school to an administration building for the elementary and high school district, among other things. The property is located north of East Main Street and west of Yard Office Road.
Now the Yellowstone County Election Administrator will prepare a mail ballot election plan for the Nov. 7 general election.
In other business, Transportation Direction Zada Stamper reported the transportation committee met and discussed engine replacement for Bus 7, a 2009, 82-student capacity bus used on the Highway 212 route. It has several problems related to the new emission requirements resulting in a loss of power and regeneration issues. Stamper said due to the number of students that ride the route, the bus size is necessary for the year. She said Riverside Repair would start work immediately at a cost of $23-27,000.
The board approved replacement of the engine.
District Business Manager Donnie McVee recommended the approval of fund transfers of school district funds. She said transfers to the Compensated Absences Fund and Multidistrict Agreement Fund are part of the end-of-the-year procedure where transactions are processed to finalize accounting following OPI guidelines.
She recommended the approval of $208, 515.35 from three different funds.
The board approved the transfer of the funds.
Other agenda items:
• Fifteen school aides, bus drivers and coaches were hired after board approval.
• West Principle Kelly Anderson introduced Leah Winchell as an aide for West school. Anderson said Winchell was well qualified for the position as she has taken childcare training courses in special education and has over 300 hours of EMT volunteer training with the Park City ambulance, plus experience with elementary age children in daycare settings.
• Laurel Athletic Director Roger Heimbigner reported that varsity volleyball coach Jodi Alexander would also coach the freshman team for one year. He stated there were no applications for the position as of last Monday, and needed to take action.
• Superintendent Linda Filpula reported on the administrator retreat and stated they reviewed data at the district and school level to develop goals for the school year. Filpula said the administrators will focus on Academic, Behavior and Climate/Culture. During the upcoming staff PIR days, each principal will work with their building staff to develop school goals aligned these principles. Filpula stressed these are continuous improvement processes.
