Random Act of Kindness Week at Middle School

Next week, Laurel Middle School will celebrate Random Act of Kindness Week with activities planned Monday through Friday.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation was established in 1995 in Denver and is dedicated to inspiring everyone to practice and spread kindness in their own lives. RAK Week is held the second full week of February with the theme “Who inspires you to be a better human?”

For middle school history teacher, high school cross country coach and WEB coordinator Amy Caldeira, the answer is her mother, who passed away in 2001.

“Her birthday coincides with RAK week,” she said.

In 2016 Caldeira put up a RAK Facebook page that had thousands of participants.

“Last year we participated at the middle school. We are starting small but we want want this to become district and community-wide. Advisory groups and clubs will be taking part and will be helping out the under–appreciated custodial and lunchroom staff with cleaning,” among other things.

Some of the WEB mentoring program students will go to Graff School to hang out and play with the younger students at recess.

Caldeira said the week is about doing the small things. “It’s about the little things; holding the door for someone or sitting next to someone at lunch you normally wouldn’t sit next to.”

Middle School Plan

LMS plans to get different clubs and groups in the building involved so that kids from all different walks of life and interest levels join in; to have one lesson available for teachers to share in their classrooms; and to end the week with a visual of the good work done in our school and community.

Monday for WEB Day: WEB students will choose two quotes for morning and advisory announcements and share their RAK for the week. Video about kindness will be shown in advisory class. Students will be given a list of RAK ideas and asked to share them at home. An all-call will go home to all parents encouraging them to participate in the theme with their kids.

Tuesday for Honors Club Day: NHS students will choose two quotes for morning and advisory announcements and share their RAK for the week. A lesson will be completed in advisories from www.randomactsofkindness.org/.

Wednesday the Fifth Grade Kindness Club students will choose two quotes for morning announcements and share their RAK for the week.

Thursday: Student Government members will choose two quotes for morning and advisory announcements and share their RAOK for the week. Advisors will ask students to share RAKs committed thus far and encourage more kind behavior. Advisors will get heart-shaped stickies today.

Friday: Staff will choose two quotes for morning and advisory announcements and share their RAK for the week. Advisors will have their students write their RAK on a heart sticky and send them to the office. The stickies will become a visual for a “Fill the Bucket” display on the stage and be left there for two weeks as a reminder of the impact the kids had during RAK Week.
