“The main goal of the MBI Team is to make our school a better place,” said Reianna Reiter, a senior who has been part of the Montana Behavioral Initiative Team since the program began in Park City four years ago. The program was started in Park City in hopes of correcting negative behaviors while rewarding positive behaviors at the same time.
“It’s a fairly open organization, said Tammy Harpster, program advisor. “There is no application process. Students are free to flow in and out as they please.”
As advisor, Harpster encourages all students to come to the meetings and take part in the initiative. Currently, there are 15 students on Park City’s MBI Team, ranging from eighth graders to seniors.
The MBI Team has started a teacher-of-the-month award to recognize a member of Park City’s staff every month, similar to the student-of-the-month award. A Positive Panther Lottery has also been started. When students get caught doing something kind, they’re given a ticket to put into the weekly drawing box. Winners get to choose a prize, such as a bag of popcorn or a soda, from the lottery cabinet.
The MBI Team is currently working on getting Park City Schools involved in Special Olympics by becoming a Unified Champion School. The students on the MBI Team hope to model responsible behavior to their peers through their actions.
