Park City boys pick up two conference wins, girls split games

The Panthers and Lady Panthers basketball teams tipped off the conference season at home against Harlowton on Friday, then traveled to Roberts to face the Rockets on Saturday.

The Park City boys picked up two conference wins over the weekend, defeating Harlowton 47-18 on Friday at home and Roberts 56-30 on the road.

Head coach Ben Southworth said “we wanted to come out fast and play physical, intense defense against the Engineers.”

The Panthers led 24-5 at halftime and never looked back, defeating the Engineers by 29 points.

Senior Rylan Gauthier led all scorers with 20 points and Talon Johnstone added 10.

They traveled to Roberts on Saturday to face a squad who recently had a good win against Fromberg.

Park City took a 10 point lead after the first quarter and stretched it to 15 at halftime.

“We tried to keep up our intensity against the Rockets and we did just that winning the boards and grabbing 16 team steals (Gauthier had seven),” Southworth said.

The Panthers didn’t let up and cruised to the 56-30 victory.

Johnstone led all scorers with 19 points. Gauthier added 16 and Connor McNeil had 11.

The Panthers had a tough conference game at home on against Broadview/Lavina on Tuesday and face Absarokee on the road tonight.

“Both teams have been a challenge for us in the past,” Southworth said.

“There are still a lot of things we can improve on and we look to keep getting better day-by-day. Hard work pays off and we are still trying to be the hardest working team. Our boys play hard all the time and they conduct themselves with professionalism on and off the court. I’m looking forward to the upcoming challenges this week,” he concluded.

The Lady Panthers split their first two conference games of the season, falling to Harlowton 34-46 and defeating Roberts 53-36.

Coach Michelle Gauthier said Harlowton was a strong team with two good shooters.

“I thought we played good team defense and we didn’t turn the ball over as much as the weekend before. The second quarter was our downfall as we only scored one point, but we stayed right with them the other three quarters.”

Blakely Verke led the team with 15 points. Hayley Story added six and Brittany Frank had five.

On Saturday Lady Panthers picked up their first conference win against Roberts.

Coach Gauthier credited the win with improved shooting.

“We could have played better defense, but was a good win,” she said.

Alyx Grabowska led Park City with 15 points and Verke added 10, and Story nine.

The girls faced Broadview/Lavina at home Tuesday and travel to Absarokee today.
