Paul O’Neil was medalist for his second event in a row, and the Laurel boys golf team edged Billings Central to win the Glendive Invitational at Cottonwood Country Club on Friday.

O’Neil birdied three of his last four holes to shoot an even-par 72 on the 6,285 yard layout.

Coach Jim O’Neil said, “Paul showed great patience waiting for the birdie opportunities to come to him on a course that was playing very difficult.”

The Locos edged their conference nemesis Billings Central by six strokes with a 326 to claim their second team title of the year. Carson Hackman shot 79 to finish in 4th place and Cash Golden had 85. Isaiah Broyles shot 87 and Ryan Kallem posted an 89.

Coach O’Neil said JV player Kade Ewalt had the round of the day.

“Kade shot a personal best round of 78 which would have placed him 4th in the varsity meet,” he said.

The Loco girls finished third as a team on the strength of Keli Hodges 5th place finish, with a round of 99.

O’Neil said the wind was disrupting and he thought “the girls showed great toughness and grit and competed hard.”

Elise Shovar shot 104, Lexie Harper had 118 and Madi Cooney finished with 129.

After the Glendive tournament concluded, the Locos continued east on Interstate 94 to compete in the Sidney Invitational at Sidney Country Club on Saturday.

There, the boys shot 323 to place 2nd behind Billings Central.

Carson Hackmann lead the team with a four-over 76, good for a 3rd place individual finish.

Coach O’Neil said, “I’m proud of the way Carson finished his round. He got off to a tough start but held it together [and] went two-under par on his last four holes, including a chip-in birdie on his final hole.”

Paul O’Neil took 5th with a 78, Kallem had 82, Golden posted 87 and Ewalt shot 94.

Broyles shot 87 on the JV side.

Elise Shovar shot 95 taking 5th individually and led the girls to a 4th place finish.

“Elise does a wonderful job of staying positive and optimistic on the golf course,” O’Neil said.

Kelin Hodes shot 103, Lexie Harper 114 and Madi Cooney 120.

The teams go to Eagle Rock for the Billings Central Invite today, then host the Laurel Invitational at Laurel Golf Club tomorrow at 9 a.m.; their final tournament before the divisional tournament next week at Fort Custer Golf Course in Hardin.
