Speaking on behalf of the Friends of the Yellowstone National Cemetery, Richard Klose told members of the American Legion Post 123 of Laurel during their virtual May meeting that there won’t be a public ceremony for Memorial Day this year. The organization will be hosting a virtual ceremony that will be aired on the news stations, as well as on the Friends’ Facebook page.

Despite Montana being the least affected state in the nation, coronavirus protocol still has to be followed, Klose said. Friends and family members are still welcome to put flags on graves.

Members of the American Legion will be placing Memorial Day flags at the City Cemetery on Saturday, as well as posting large flags at the National Cemetery. The closed ceremony at the National Cemetery will be at 9 a.m., Monday, May 25.

According to the National Cemetery Administration website, the Veterans Administration is “committed to observing Memorial Day 2020 in a manner that honors those who sacrificed for our Nation while protecting the health and safety of visitors and our team members.”

While all 142 VA national cemeteries will be open for visitation throughout the weekend of Memorial Day, NCA made the difficult decision to not host public events for Memorial Day for several reasons. First, they depend primarily on volunteers to place and remove flags and limiting the number of participants isn’t practical. And, most importantly, they must protect the health and safety of veterans, visitors and volunteers.

There will truncated services in Joliet, Rockvale and at the Gebo Cemetery.

The Clarks Fork American Legion Post 71 and the Joliet VFW Post 5748 will be doing Memorial Day services Monday, May 25th. Rev. Robert Reed will be the speaker of the day. The schedule for the day will be:

• 9 a.m. Services at Gebo Cemetery

• 10 a.m. Services at Rockvale Cemetery

• 11 a.m. Services at Joliet Cemetery

There will not be parades through the communities. Any veterans who would like to help who haven’t been contacted can show up at the Fromberg Legion Hall or call Rich Pierce at 962-3320 or Jody Stene 962-3779.
