Mike Mooney of Laurel is excited that the Montana Association for the Blind’s Summer Orientation Program has moved to the campus of Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

“This is the first year at Rocky, but I think the partnership will last and grow as we develop the program here,” Mooney said Tuesday. In the past, Mooney served as the state president of the organization and enjoys helping those with recent eye-sight loss learn the skills they’ll need to function day-to-day. As the current president of the Rimrock Chapter of the MAB, Mooney is working to line up volunteers, speakers and entertainment to fill evening hours during the program.

The Summer Orientation Program teaches adults from Montana with vision loss the skills necessary to live independently and to function in their home, community and at work. The four-week program begins June 14 and runs through July 9. It is free for attendees and includes lodging and food.

During the day, all students will take the classes on Activities for Daily Living and Orientation and Mobility. A variety of electives are available including Computers, Smart Technology, Cooking, Crafts, Braille, Sewing, Exercise and Wood Working. Throughout the course of the program, students should gain confidence in their skills useful to everyday living while enjoying activities that will enrich their lives while they develop new friendships.

Mooney is seeking speakers and other volunteers to offer entertainment or music to the group in the evenings. Contact him at 672-5285 to volunteer.

The Rimrock Chapter MAB meets the second Wednesday of every month at 1540 Broadwater (the American Legion hall) at 7 p.m.
