MHSA sets postseason attendance numbers, delays start of winter sports

Thursday, October 15, 2020

The Montana High School Association Executive Board conducted a Zoom Board Meeting on October 13, where they approved the following for Fall Sports Post Season:

State Cross Country

The MHSA All Class Cross Country Meet will still be held in Kalispell. However instead of a one-day event it will be held over two days: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24. Class A and Class B will participate on Friday and Class C and Class AA will participate on Saturday. The requirements and considerations for regular season will be followed except there will be one start for each race which will be assigned into alleys. Each participant will be allowed two tickets for the state meet.

The district and divisional volleyball tournament sites are required to have local county health department approval to host and they must send that approval to the MHSA office. The tournaments must follow all the requirements and considerations previously approved by the Executive Board.

Class AA will hold playoffs and the other three classification tournaments will be held at different sites. The MHSA staff is working on the final details for those host sites.

Spectator Passes – Football, Volleyball and Soccer

Per previous Board action, each site must provide a minimum of two tickets per suited player for both home and visiting fans. In addition the Board approved in volleyball, football and soccer to allow up to a maximum of 6 spectator passes per uniformed player for both home and visitor, 4 spectator tickets for alternates and managers, 2 spectator tickets for coaches, and 2 spectator tickets for cheerleaders (up to a maximum of 12 cheerleaders) with the approval of county health. No more than the maximum can be distributed, and tickets must be distributed equally for home and visitors.

Also, because of increasing COVID-19 numbers:

Student sections will not be allowed during post season play.

Bands will not be allowed during post season play.

In other business:

• The Board approved allowing Speech, Debate and Drama participants to begin practice on Monday, October 19th. The Board also directed that after December 1st meets can be held however, they must be conducted virtually. The possibility of having in-person meets this season will continue to be evaluated.

• The Board approved delaying the start of winter sports (basketball, wrestling and swimming) practices until December 7th. The original practice start date was November 19th. The first contests can be held on January 4th. The delay will allow time for schools and communities to assist in flattening the curve and to get through two holiday seasons within their own teams and within their own communities before contests begin.
