Meier to play ball at Dawson

Trevor Meier, an outstanding infielder with the Laurel Dodgers, has signed on to play for the Bucs at Dawson Community College in Glendive starting this fall.

“I won’t be red shirting, so I’ll start practicing when everyone does,” the Columbus High School senior said. “I’ll be playing mainly second base, but I can play the outfield and other positions if needed.”

Meier has primarily played second base for the Dodgers, which won the Class A state championship four times since 2009. They were runner-ups in 2014 and 2015.

Meier has a golden glove – he led the state in fielding with a .995 fielding percentage and only one error out of 191 total chances during the regular season. He was selected All Conference Second Baseman in 2015. He also led the Dodgers in batting with a .426 average last year and only six strikeouts compared to 22 walks.

Meier lettered in wrestling in his freshman year and in football in his sophomore year. He said he stopped playing high school sports to concentrate on baseball. Baseball is a big part of his life.

“I’ve been playing baseball pretty much since I could walk,” he said. “I started playing organized baseball in T-ball. I made the Laurel Dodgers as an eighth grader and will finish up my fifth year with them this summer.”

Meier said he received an athletic scholarship from Dawson.

“That’s full tuition, the max they can give,” Meier said. “Brent Diegel, the head coach at Dawson, is also the American Legion coach in Glendive, so I’ve played against him for the last couple years.”

Meier said he plans to study business in college.

“I don’t have a dream job lined out, but I’d like to pursue something around baseball,” he said.
