LPD press release details officer assault

At 1:16 a.m. on August 30, a Laurel police officer conducted a traffic stop on East Main Street at the intersection of East Maryland and began a DUI investigation on the driver, Robert P Allen Jr. During the investigation Allen began making threatening statements to the officer. While attempting to place Allen in custody, he struck the officer in the face with his elbow. The officer was struck in the head a second time when the officer attempted to place him in handcuffs. 

Montana Highway Patrol troopers and Yellowstone County Sheriff’s deputies responded and assisted the officer in transporting the suspect to the Yellowstone County Detention Facility. 

When the suspect arrived at the jail he fought with detention officers and was tased several times. A YCDF officer was injured in the incident and jail property was damaged.

The LPD officer received injuries and was treated by the Laurel Ambulance Service, but was not transported to the hospital. 

Allen is charged with speeding, operating a motor vehicle without a drivers license, aggravated felony DUI and felony assault on a peace officer resulting in bodily injury.

More charges are expected to be filed and he is being held in YCDF without bond.
