Locos tame Ponies

Outlook staff writer

Any time the offense, defense and special teams score in the same game it’s a big deal. The Locomotives achieved that feat in the first half in Havre on Friday and went on to break the Blue Ponies in a 42-21 victory.

Coach Mike Ludwig said the team had a sluggish start to the game.

“I don’t know if we were tired from the long bus ride, but we struggled to move the ball until Chris’ interception got us going” he said.

Locos scored four different ways in the first half and took a 29-7 lead into the locker room. The spark they needed came with 7:11 left in the first quarter when defensive back Chris Abell intercepted the Ponies for a 35-yard pick-six. Then the offense went to work and Gage Hull connected with Logan Kennedy on a 6-yard TD pass. Ethan Renner was next to contribute with a 2-yard TD run at the 3:52 mark in the second. After Havre punched it in from the Laurel 4 to make it 22-7, Deklan Harper returned the ensuing kickoff 86-yards with 0:54 in the half to take the 29-7 lead into the break.

The Blue Ponies outscored Laurel 14-13 in the second half but the 22-point first-half lead was too much for them to overcome and Laurel got their third win of the season. They now sit atop the Eastern A with Sidney at 3-0.

Havre led in nearly every significant stat; time of possession, rushing yards, passing yards and first downs. But they also led in turnovers (4) and penalties, getting flagged 12 time for 105 yards, compared to Laurel’s two penalties totaling 15 yards.

“The +2 margin was key for us, but we have to stop turning the ball over,” he said, referring to the Locos two fumbles.

Along with Abell’s pick-six, Cameron Younger, Gaje Leischener and Harper each had interceptions.

Gage Hull was 11/14 for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

Ludwig is happy with the success the team is having this season but said he is working on keeping the team grounded.

“We are still making mistakes and not getting lined up properly. We are taking it one practice and one game at a time,” he said.

Tomorrow the Locomotives host the 0-3 Park County Rangers for the homecoming game at 7 p.m.

Ludwig said Livingston’s record is not a factor in the Locos preparations.

“We are not overlooking them. They are competitive and the coaches have them playing hard. They caught some bad breaks this year and the film shows they have good players.”
