Loco soccer team ready to host Whitefish

The Laurel Locomotive girls’ soccer team defeated Belgrade for the third time this season and like the other two games, Tuesday night’s state play-in game was close.
Too close for coach Aloma Jess but a 2-1 win is a win.
“I am very pleased that the Lady Locos played with possesive composure and aggression for much of the match. Playing Belgrade was a blessing in disguise because we have that experience of aggressive play and the level of play that we must maintain for the rest of the post season. Despite the close score, I felt that we controlled much of the first half and parts of the second half,” said coach Jess.
The coach singled out the play of keeper Paige O’Toole who had numerous athletic saves.
Saturday’s game is at 10 a.m. In an odd bit of scheduling with boys and girls teams from the same school in a state tournament, the Whitefish boys play Laurel at 1 p.m.
Whitefish comes in with a 7-5-0 record with one of the losses coming at the hands of Laurel earlier this season. Laurel is sporting an 11-1-1 record with the only loss of the year coming at the hands of Central last week.
“We are excited to be hosting Whitefish here this Saturday,” said coach Jess.

Laurel 6, Livingston 0
The 3-1 loss gave coach Jess some talking points. Unfortunately for Livingston, the LHS girls came out on fire and won 6-0.
“It was the bounce back win we needed after Central and set us up for success against Belgrade,” said coach Jess.
Lauren Schwab starting the scoring for the Locos in Livingston only five minutes into the game with an assist by Paige Ventling. Sammi Spitzer had an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to end the scoring in the first half.
Livingston only managed one shot on goal the first half and 11 for the entire game.
In the second half, Schwab scored her second goal and Megan Steinmasel, Aspen Cotter and Morgan Maack rounded out the scoring.
There were no stats available following the Belgrade win but they will be included in next week’s story.
