Local youth service groups team up with Wreaths Across America

Thursday, November 7, 2019

Observed annually on a Saturday in December designated by Congress, National Wreaths Across America Day is a movement to cover all Veterans grave markers with a Christmas wreath.

Remember. Honor. Teach. This is the mission of Wreaths Across America. By coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and other veterans cemeteries around the country Wreaths Across America strives to remember our fallen heroes, honor those who serve and teach our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.

In an effort to sell wreath sponsorships and ensure every veteran’s grave marker at the Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel receives a wreath this December, local groups American Heritage Girls, Trail Life USA, and the Young Marines are teaming up and will be at all Yellowstone County Ace Hardware Stores Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. Locally, a ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the placement of wreaths at Yellowstone National Cemetery, where over 1,000 local veterans are laid to rest. This is open to anyone who would like to attend.

In 2018, there were approximately 400 wreaths placed at Yellowstone National Cemetery leaving 600 without a veterans’ wreath. This year our goal is to place at least 1,000. With the community’s generosity, we are hoping to meet this goal and ensure no veteran is forgotten. Each hand made, fresh, live wreath costs $15 to sponsor and is made in the United States with Maine balsam.

“Those serving in the military are doing their part, but it is our part as Americans to remember and honor them, and that’s what Wreaths Across America does,” said the grandson of Wreaths Across America Executive Director Karen Worcester.
