Local credit union food drive benefiting high school

Knowing that many students enrolled in Laurel School District schools go hungry every day, SEG Federal Credit Union is running a Food Drive throughout October to  benefit the Laurel High School Pantry and the Laurel School District’s Backpack Meal Program. The drive will benefit local students who are unable to purchase breakfast or lunch at school, and for students that need food at home.
The Laurel High School Food Pantry was started by a local student as an Eagle Scout project and is carried on by the school’s librarian and members of the student council. The Food Pantry is supplied only by donations and relies on community food drives like the one SEG is running.
“It has become increasingly apparent that we have kids in our communities that are going without food,” said Danielle Kopp, SEG FCU Vice President. “If we don’t step up as community members and help these students out, how can we possibly think they will succeed?”
SEG FCU recently donated $500 to the Laurel Elementary and Middle School Backpack Meal Program, which provides weekend meal packs for students to take home, and will make another $500 donation next week to Fromberg FFA’s Backpack Meal Program, too. Montanans can help both the Backpack Meal Program and the Laurel High School Pantry stock up by donating ready-made foods, such as pasta dinners, cup of noodles and snacks like peanut butter to go cups and granola bars to SEG’s food drive at their branch on 617 SE 4th St. in Laurel throughout October.
SEG will be hosting a lunch today at their Laurel branch at 11 a.m. on International Credit Union Day and are asking attendees to donate $1 or a food item to the food drive. The event will also include giveaways and drawings for cash prizes to thank members. Everyone is invited to attend.
SEG FCU staff and anyone that donates will be logging their volunteer time as part of the Montana’s Credit Unions’ Keep the Change, Give Your Time campaign. The initiative’s goal is for Montanans to give 2,017 hours of service to their community during the first 19 days of October, leading up to International Credit Union Day today.
