The Laurel High School Speech, Drama and Debate squad continued their 2016-2017 season at the Belgrade High School Invitational Speech, Drama and Debate Meet. There were ten Class A schools competing for the Class A Sweepstakes: Fergus County of Lewistown, Butte Central, Whitefish, Beaverhead County of Dillon, Belgrade, Hardin, Stevensville, Colombia Falls and Laurel. Laurel clinched second place behind Colombia Falls for the Class A Speech Sweepstakes and took third place in the Class A Drama sweepstakes.
A first place finish in Lincoln Douglas debate by junior Austin Amestoy led the performance of the Speech and Debate squad. Other speech squad finishers were Zoe Thomae and Kennedy Deming, third in public forum debate; Sebastian Andersen and Colter Given took eighth in team debate; Ben Longbottom placed fifth in Lincoln-Douglas debate; Cara Goeke and Corinna Bickel placed fourth in public forum debate; Will Russell placed fourth in impromptu speaking; Hannah Kopp placed fourth in humorous oral interpretation; and Trinitee Powell placed sixth in original oratory. Many other competitors contributed to the speech squad’s overall points as well, including Rylee Johnson and Teresa Twichel in informative speaking, Samantha Ellingson and Trever White in humorous interpretation and Andrew Sutton in dramatic oral interpretation.
A first place finish by three time champion Abigail Hillis, first in pantomime, led the drama squad in team points. Halie Tisdale, sixth in humorous solo and Sydney Olson and Bailey Brockman, eighth in classical duo also earned team points. Other drama competitors were Keisha Issacson in pantomime, Casey Burrows and Jessamyn Reichert in serious solo, Levi Sharbono and Tye Brown in humorous duo and Taylor Nobel and Megan Maida in classical duo.
Once again, this year Laurel High School will host the Class A State Tournament Jan. 27-28. Hosting a tournament will require more than 400 volunteer judging hours in two days. Judges training will be offered prior to the event. Anyone interested in judging or helping out at the State Tournament may contact Liz Schwartz at 628-3953 or can sign up online at http://bit.do/laurelsdd.
