LHS play took audience to an island

Outlook staff writer

Laurel High School students took to the stage Nov. 17 and 18 to perform the play Once on This Island.
Judging by the quality of acting and singing on the stage and the audience reaction, the LHS crew nailed the play, which was based on a 1985 novel.
In a high school with lots of talent, Hailey Maurer and Brett Robertus stole the show with their acting, dancing and singing abilities.
Makayla Amestoy was delightful as Little Ti Moune. The elementary school student more than held her own and she won the audience over. LHS senior Hailey Maurer played Little Ti Moune when she was in elementary school as well.
The staging, costumes and sheer energy coming from the cast of 43 students was something to behold.
Choir director Rhonda Burghardt is to be congratulated for getting the most out of this cast and the way she throws herself and her merry band of volunteers at a new play each year.
Other cast members included: HannaBelle Peterson, Jonathon Gotschall, Austin Amestoy, Spencer Maurer, Haile Tisdale, Sydney Olson, Sebastion Anderson and Corinna Bickel.
The many talented storytellers pieced the one-act play together. The storytellers were fun to watch in their colorful costumes.
Storytellers included: Andrew Sutton, Hannah Kopp, Abigail Hillis, Olivia Keyes, Aleah Goeke, Aliza Pollock, Karissa Pollock, Kyla Pollock, Cassidy VanderVoort, Makiah Gotschall, Tenley Miller, Tivonna Webb, Abigail Peterson, Karmen Peterson, Aspen Ryder, Emily Souder, Ashely Goss, Abi Clark, Kenzi Anderson, Makayla Rawson, Abby Miller, Katie Ostermiller, Marley, Merchen, Amelia Souder, Kennedy Deming, Lizzie Brown, Megan Maida, Brynnan Miller, Taylor Noble, Cierra Metcalf, Kaylee Mills and Cassie Sissel.
The play also featured a percussion group that really added to the island feeling. Colton McCleary, Keelan Hofferber, Payton Chavez and band director Bidwell contributed to the play’s success.
Some behind-the-scenes folks who also contributed to the play included
• Michelle Maurer: piano accompanist and vocal coach
• Linda Swenson: costume designer and creative director
• Michael Hammer: Assembled backdrops, designed set tables with the assistance of Brett Robertus.
• Sherry Sauskojus: Sketching, painting, palm tree construction with the assistance of Jessica McCoy and Rebecca Peterson. Peterson was also the official show photographer.
