LHS girls band together in two hard-fought games

In a tough loss to Billings Senior at home, the lady Locos had a hard time scoring in their 62-40 loss last Thursday. Rylee Clark went ice cold, a very unusual sight to see, with defenders swarming her and getting a hand in her face on every shot forced her into just three-points for the game.
Dakota Boehler went down early with what looked like an ankle injury and was escorted into the locker room. Moments like that bring a odd quietness to home fans, however she returned just a few minutes later to rejoin her team, but still wasn’t much help, only scoring eight points.
Laurel didn’t have an answer for the very tall and very talented Kola Bad Bear who scored at ease and got most of her points off of put backs in the post. The Broncs’ sophomore had 22 for the game.
The only positive for the Lady Locos was sophomore Aspen Cotter, who had 18-points and is having an outstanding year proving herself again and again for a team she will most likely eventually inherit.

It’s not always how a team loses, it’s how they bounce back. After a deflating loss two days previous to the Broncs, Laurel came back strong with a 63-51 win over Miles City last Saturday.
It started with seniors Dakota Boehler and Rylee Clark who used their leadership on both ends of the floor and lead their team in points with 21 and 18 each.
“Our varsity team got a big win tonight,” said head coach Amber Griffith. “Ten girls put on a varsity uniform tonight and each one made plays to help their team get the win.”
Ellie Kildahl played outstanding defense, rebounded and finished around the rim at every opportunity. Aspen Cotter got into foul trouble, but still made two clutch free throws.
Praise from coach Griffith went to all of her players as she discussed each of them individually and came away from the game rightfully proud to have each and every one of them.
Paige O’Toole broke down the press and attacked the basket at every opportunity, McKenna Robertus played amazing defense and gave her team tons of second-shot opportunities, Riley Chapman helped on defense on the inside and had a huge three-point play and Kaitlyn Dawes really stepped up in finishing at the rim and rebounding. Last but not least, Kylee Hoke and Lauren Schwab both had great quarters themselves helping break the press. It truly was a team win on defense, as every single Loco came ready to play and held their opponent to a five-point final quarter.
“Basketball is the ultimate team game and tonight our team looked good,” said Griffith. “It was fun to watch.”
The Lady Locomotives moved to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Conference.
They play next on Friday the 13th at Glendive, at 7:30 p.m.
