League invites citizens to learn about local government

Betty Whiting, former Laurel resident and a representative of the League of Women Voters of
Billings, extended an invitation to the Laurel City Council and all Laurel residents at the Nov. 15 council meeting. The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a conference Dec. 1-2, Connecting with Local Government at the Billings Public Library. Anyone interested in the operation of local governments is welcome to attend.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan group that tries to help citizens learn more about their government. Last year, the League observed the County Commissioners. The organization determined there should be more public awareness regarding the structure of the county and the city governments.
On the first day of the conference, participants will select a theme to explore. On the second day, participants will hear from six different departments from the City of Billings and Yellowstone County. Dan Clark and Blake Christensen, from the MSU Local Government Center, will speak at the conference. They will have the charters from the city of Laurel, the city of Billings and the town of Broadview, as well as the County Legislative Rules. Clark and Christensen will explain whether or not concerns can be met within the charters and the government structures or if they need to be tweaked in some way, Whiting said. At the end, the men will speak about what the next steps would be and whether or not structures need to be changed.
Registration is $25 for both day or $15 for half-day sessions. Registration is limited to 96 participants. For a registration form and more information, see www.lwvbillings.org
