Laurel High School’s track and field team is nearing the end of their regular season. So, for the first and last time this year, Laurel travelled to Butte High School for the John Tomich Invitational to face off with many other fellow class A teams.

Both the boys and the girls wound up with second place finishes out of the 12 schools participating, and the boys took second by just two points. The boys ended the day with 100 total points and the girls finished with 118.

It seemed as if the boys had a top-three finisher in every event. They had 14 total personal records amongst them, including 10 of those coming on the track. Freshman Beau Dantic set his PR in both the 200 meter, 23.09, and the 100 meter dash, 11.64, finishing first and ninth in those events, respectively. Ethan Renner also set his PR in the 100 meter dash with his time of 11.45.

Levi Taylor was back to his normal performance, placing first in both events that he participated in. He took first in the 800 meter run, as well as the 3200 meter run. Junior Haden Wilson trailed him in the 3200 meter run, finish in second. Wilson also took tenth in the 1600 meter run.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the boys posted a season best of 3:32.34 en route to finishing first in this meet, as well as qualifying for state.

Ely Kraft took second in the shot put with a PR throw of 47-11. He took first in the discus, and also took fifth in the javelin.

The Lady Loco side of Lau- rel’s track and field team performed quite well. Freshman Lauren Taylor secured her first first place finish of her high school career, which came in the 800 meter run. She set her PR with her time of 2:37.21, and also set her PR in the 1600 meter run, in which she placed third.

Junior Lizzie Wisecup also set a PR in a track event. She finished the 400 meter run with a PR time of 1:05.36. and also placed fifth in the 800 meter run.

Sophomore Grace Timm returned to normal form as she took the first place medal in the 3200 meter run, and the took second in the 1600.

In the field for the ladies, senior thrower Jessie LeFevre set her PR in the javelin with her throw of 125-09.50, taking first place in the event with ease. Sophomore Keeli Harris also set her PR in the javelin, taking fourth with her throw of 99-07.50.

Gracey Willis gained the most points for the Lady Locos in the jumping events, taking first in the triple jump and second in the long jump. She also set her PR in the long jump with a leap of 16-04.

Laurel’s next varsity track meet will come this weekend in Miles City on Saturday, May 4. After that, they will have their final regular season meet of the season in Glendive on Friday, May 10. Divisionals take place the following weekend. For state, the Laurel athletes will finally be able to return home and perform in front of their home crowd for one last time this season, starting on Saturday, May 24 at the Laurel Sports Complex. Good luck to the Laurel track and field teams as they wind down their season.
