Laurel students learn money skills from Altana professionals

To celebrate Credit Unions’ Youth Month, staff from Altana Federal Credit Union talked to more than 1,000 Montana students throughout April, including many in Laurel. They covered budgeting, career choices and how to manage their finances.
Heidi Knudson, Business Development Manager and Megan Kongaika, AVP of Public Relations at Altana FCU visited four classes at Laurel High School, eight classes at West Elementary School and all fifth graders at Laurel Middle School. They used stories of the Berenstain Bears and a money jar to teach elementary schoolers how to “spend, save, share,” focusing on how they can earn money, how to make good spending choices and the importance of saving.
“The response was great,” said Knudson, who participates in this individual classroom outreach every April at schools in Laurel. “Kids are always excited to learn, and teachers love having us there. Teaching children and young teens about money management and improving their financial literacy is very important, which is why Altana FCU participates in this program every year.”
This year’s Credit Unions Youth Month theme was, “Give a Hoot About Savings,” so children from West Elementary School received owl erasers as a takeaway from their session with Knudson and Kongaika.
Financial education is an integral part of the Credit Union philosophy, with branches regularly participating in outreach programs and events that deliver messages about money management and career development to young people.
Other educators in or around Laurel who would like a representative from Altana FCU to speak to their classes should contact Knudson at hknudson@altanafcu.org
